I'm going to check out a KLE 500 soon, any thoughts on the bike's ability as a dual purpose explorer/commuter type bike? Especially compared to a KLR 650.
I like the twin idea!

Owned two before the klr, think it is capable for both purposes. Did different
kinds of gravel with mine and technical stuff. Can hold it's own with the klr's
Riding position leans more towards road use while Klr have a more aggressive riding
position. The twin with 6 speed gearbox and high revs also leaning more towards road
but like I said, the machine is more than capable if you are... Would definitely buy
one if I could afford two have both.
It's never wrong to do the right thing

My son rides a KLE and the bike is more than capable off road. On the dirt he will outride many on KLR's and when it comes to the long slog home on the tar, then the KLE comes into its own. At 140 its just cruising where the KLR is working hard.
Downside compared to the KLR is that it doesn't have the same torque and you have to keep the revs up. It's also a lot heavier.

It doesn't use oil either.

Its a good bike, but then so is the KLR

Did not want to hi-jack the GG bash thread.

It is not a KLR, but seems a very good buy

Wow, that is a really neat looking bike, and it's a Yamaha! But sadly way out of my price range..

Price is always a factor, even if it is a bargain. Good luck with the search.

Cave Girl has a KLE, she loves that bike, has something ridiculous like 70,000km after a rebuild at something like 50,000km.

She's done Baviaans with it comfortably and I've had the pleasure of riding it off road too - I don't like the seat for riding position though, too much forward leaning.

I don't think it's as easy to work on as the KLR, but Richard should be able to comment on that.
