Not what I wanted to hear, but maybe what I needed to hear.

My 2009 black frame sits on 69000km not a day's problems and I might use a pint of oil in 6000km.

Was thinking of getting my hand on another KLR with lower mileage, but if lower mileage equates to more problems it does not seem to make sense...

I have to say that I commute daily 75km, and my top speed is 90km so the reffs very seldom goes past 4000, don't know if that has a big impact on the oil usage??

My philosophy (in terms of vehicles) is "rather the devil you know, than the devil you don't!"

The KLR does not have mileage related issues - Gix has one with almost 200 000 km on, plenty people around the 100 000 km mark without issues. If your doo is done, then just keep her topped up and spoil her with some new oil every 5000 - 7000 km. She won't let you down.

Then, when the oil consumption gets out of hand, do the Schnitz 685! B)

Great idea! You always need N+1 bikes, where N is how many you now have.

At low speeds, even the oval bore 08's use very little oil. Oil usage becomes a problem at higher revs, like 5000+.

I actually ave 3 KLR's that I alternate every week, unless I'm running in someone else's bike, Like I'm doing now with Piet's new 685.

I have a green 2008, and even with a mild oil addiction, I love her to bits- And I go past 5000 RPM on a daily basis. She uses a bit of oil, and the day that becomes a big enough problem for me, I might go 685. With the riding style you described, oil should not be a problem. Mine will hit 60 000Km this week and I wish I could turn her back to 14 000.

I'd say get it :)
Die donkie is 'n wonderlike ding ;)
